In addition to being a unitary authority area in Cheshire, Warrington is also a borough and a town in the Greater Manchester region. It was awarded the designation of a New Town in 1968 and has continued to prosper significantly since then.

Being a major transport hub has also helped its economy, with numerous travellers stopping here on their way to different locations such as Manchester, Liverpool and St Helens.
